“knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin.” – Romans 6:6-7
But did anyone ever tell you that the self has a mind of its own and it’s not going down without a fight?
Yeah… When I read that verse I’m all, “Awwww, yeah. We’re free from sin!” Which is kind of like saying, Awww, yes – we’re free from fat! Then that piece of chocolate sin cake comes along.
(Btw. Kudos to Pinchofyum.com for the AMAZING cake photo – I LOVE her recipes)
So yeah. Sin cake. You know, the one with the dark chocolate ganache that you hope there’s milk in the fridge for because it’s not going to cut it without it. Sorry, what were talking about? I got distracted by cake.
Right! Death to self!
So along comes this sin cake and then you remember…
The self doesn’t want to die. In fact, it wants to live and it’ll fight you.
Put another way… You’ve been a good customer of the world (the enemy) for so long and NOW you want to change?! But – but – but! Look at this sin cake!
While the verse makes it sound so romantic,
our old self was crucified with Him
Remember what crucifixion is…
(Didn’t know crucifixion cake was a thing? It’s okay, neither did I until I did a Google Search for crucifixion images.)
Indeed. Some days it’s easy to say, “God, I did this. Please forgive me and cleanse me of my unrighteousness.”
Other days, that b*$@# needs to be tackled and taken down with a sniper rifle.
Lucky for us, Yah asks for obedience more than joy.
What do we say as parents? “You don’t have to like it, but you do have to do it.” Why would our heavenly father be any different? The answer is, he isn’t.
The Good News
When you finally kill the self and are able to step out in what Yah has put on your heart, you know what happens? God happens. You see the fruit of the Holy Spirit in your life.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.“
Remember God-Fruit? Yeah. We’re called to be trees that bear that. Even though sin-cake looks downright tasty, it doesn’t sustain the spirit and give us peace. Oh no… It gives us diabetes. That’s what it does.
And God-Fruit is filling. It fills us with peace.
But you can only get it if you murder the self. So kill the witch and let’s get to the good stuff.
